About Us

Uptown Lexington, Inc. is a nonprofit, 501 (c) 3 organization, charged with administering the Main Street Program and managing the revitalization of the Uptown Center in Lexington. Lexington is located in Davidson County, serving as the seat of County Government, in the heart of the piedmont in North Carolina.

The Main Street Program was created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the late 1970’s, and is coordinated on a statewide level by the North Carolina Main Street Program, under the Department of Commerce. Lexington was selected in 1993 as a North Carolina Main Street Community. The local program receives technical assistance and support from the state and national programs, and through a vast network of communities that are all working to strengthen their downtowns.

Uptown Lexington's mission is to create an environment that fosters the redevelopment of Lexington’s historic uptown center, as the community's primary economic, cultural, and social center. We utilize the National Main Street Center's Four Point approach as tools for growth of the district:

  1. Organization to build consensus and cooperation among many groups and individuals with an interest in uptown, and to identify sources of funding for revitalization activities;
  2. Design to enhance the physical appearance of historic buildings, encourage compatible new construction, public improvements, and to develop sensitive design management systems;
  3. Promotion to market the traditional district’s assets to customers, potential investors, new businesses, local citizens and visitors through events and advertising;
  4. Economic Restructuring to strengthen the district’s economic base while exploring new opportunities and meeting new challenges.
