Start With Your Heart Walking Trails

Uptown Lexington is a great place to walk! With many sidewalks and lamp posts replaced during the 1996-1997 Streetscape project it is also a safe place to walk.

Follow these Start With Your Heart markers to find a route that fits your needs and ability. While you are walking, you can discover great shops, restaurants, and historical landmarks. The trails range in distance from .5 to 1.9 miles with some of the trails overlapping. Download a map below. There are maps for each trail and one with all five.

What is Start With Your Heart?

Start With Your Heart
trails were funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase physical activity and improve the nutritional status of North Carolina residents. The program required regions in North Carolina to focus on changing the community environment and developing policies promoting physical activity and nutrition. Lexington's project promotes walking as a means of improving your health and bringing people into the uptown area.

Lexington's project was a joint effort between the Davidson County Healthy Carolinians Partnership and Uptown Lexington, Inc.. Lexington received funds in 2004 from Start With Your Heart to establish self-guided walking paths in the uptown area. The City of Lexington Street Department installed thirty-one granite markers, which are located throughout the uptown district and surrounding neighborhoods.

In 2010, Uptown Lexington, Inc. received funding from Tourism Recreation Investment Partnerhsip for Davidson County Foundation to refurbish the markers with fresh paint.

So, come uptown and start walking!
